A place with an incredible history. It was built at the end of the 16th century, a few years after Shargorod was granted the Magdeburg right. Played a huge role in the life of the city, which in the early 20th century was 70% inhabited by Jews. During the Turkish occupation in the 17th century, it was turned into a mosque. After World War II, the Holocaust, and the mass emigration of Jews, the Soviet authorities used the synagogue as a warehouse for a juice factory. It is now owned by the city's Jewish community, but has not yet been reconstructed. The passage to the synagogue is from the side street, if you go down a little lower and turn right. I hope that one day this monument, as well as others, many of which are in Shargorod, will be restored, and this city will become a tourist destination.

The stone-built fortress-type synagogue was part of the city's fortifications. Built on its southeastern outskirts near the confluence of the Kovbasna River and the Murashka River, the synagogue was not only a dominant feature of the local Jewish community for joint prayers and theology, but also a fortress that saved Turks and Tatars from pogroms and pogroms. Built according to the canons of fortification architecture, this building had thick, up to 2 m, stone walls, patrol battle around the perimeter of the roof, boundaries with loopholes, spacious basements with secret underground roads and exits to the surface, as well as rooms for parishioners , detention of prisoners, etc. In particular, the synagogue withstood the attack of the Cossacks Severin Nalyvayko in 1595. In 1672-1699, during the Turkish rule in Podillia, it was used as a mosque. Then, after the return of the region to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and later as part of the Russian Empire - again as a synagogue. It was closed by the Bolsheviks in the 1930s. and transferred as one of the shops to the juice factory. Now it has been returned to the Jewish religious community of Shargorod.

Is it possible to get inside?

Beautiful architectural monument. To get closer, you need to ask at the checkpoint, ie. the building itself behind the fence. Needs restoration.

It is a pity that they do not restore.
