Distinctive Wood Kitchen and Bath

This company subcontracted to make cabinets for my kitchen remodel. Cabinets are the most expensive item in a kitchen remodel, and I was promised custom wood cabinets. The entire experience from beginning to end was strange and haphazard. When meeting with Greg to go over what I wanted, he seemed rushed and hurried. He asked a few basic questions about style, but there was no detailed questionnaire about each specific item that can be customized. He did produce drawings, and I was able to detail drawers or cupboards as I preferred. Later in the process though, the drawings were changed without consulting me, and that changed the symmetry of one cabinet run that I had specifically wanted done symmetrically. I described the door and drawer detail I wanted, but because Greg does not have any pictures or samples of what styles he can make, I sent a specific photo and name of the exact style I was looking for. Greg didn't have the exact bit, so went ahead and made something similar, provided no sample, and when it arrived in my kitchen, I was shocked! No one had let me know that the style I asked for wasn't available. In addition, the island unit had a completely different style door on it, and none of the specific extra items I had specified were delivered. To make matters worse, the upper drawers were all styled in a way that my hardware would not fit right. Greg exclaimed that he could have made them differently if I had told him about the hardware, but of course he never asked about hardware during any of our conversations. I might add that many options that can be customized were never offered or discussed. If you want inlaid doors or partial overlay, you will have to know ahead of time what options are possible because there is no thorough specification process that Greg uses, it seems. My contractor asked me to provide a sample of the drawer style that I wanted after the problem was discovered, so I ordered the exact drawer style and material in one of the drawer sizes that would be needed for replacement. After seeing my sample, Greg reluctantly agreed to replace the doors and drawers, and decided to order them from the supplier who sent the sample. I was satisfied I would get what I wanted. But that turned out to not be the case. Weeks go by and when finally pressed by the contractor for the order to paint and install, it turns out the replacements haven't even been ordered. Another month and they finally arrive, only instead of ordering the exact sample I provided, Greg had ordered mdf door panels. The salesperson had recommended them! No call to ask the customer paying for custom cabinets to see if changing the order is okay, he just downgraded from beautiful wood inlay panels to mdf! Apparently, he thought I wouldn't notice since the doors were going to be painted. Unfortunately for Distinctive Woods, they would have had a grateful happy customer if they had just provided what the customer asked for. Instead, they earned a negative review because no one wants a contractor that will just switch out lower quality materials after charging the customer for something else. Six months into a kitchen remodel which had been further delayed by Greg's failure to order the replacements in a timely fashion, I was forced to accept the mdf doors in order to finish the job before guests began arriving. It will cost me an additional $2500 to get the right replacement doors installed. I won't be recommending Greg at Distinctive Woods. If you go through Stonewood, who was the lead contractor on my project, you do not have to use their subs, and are able to hire your own cabinet supplier for your remodel, and I highly recommend you do if you care about the details of your order.
