I would normally talk directly with the person in charge of billing at UNM Hospitals about the terrible service I received from that department, but the person I spoke with in billing told me -- over and over -- that I can't talk to anyone else in their department because my account was passed over to a debt collection agency. Yes, passed over because UNM Hospitals did nothing to let me know I owed them more money. The first call I received over a year ago was to tell me I owed them money and they were sending the account to the debt collector. I found out they had the wrong address, they corrected it and I paid the money. A while later -- again, after no contact -- I received another call saying I owed more money and the account was going to the debt collector. I explained what had happened before and we started a monthly payment plan because the UNM Hospitals billing person said that would keep my account from going to the bill collector. After two months, I paid off the rest of the bill and thought that was the end of it. Another while later -- again, after no contact of any kind -- I received another call saying I owed more money and the account was going to the debt collector. Again, I explained what had now happened twice before and the billing person said they would check into it and call me back if I did indeed owe more money. No calls. No bills. Recently -- over two years from the date of service -- I got a call a few days ago from the bill collection agency asking how I wanted to pay the bill. I said I first wanted to talk with UNM Hospital, since they hadn't notified me that I owed them money, again. I spent the rest of that day going through all my medical bill statements and understanding the time line of what had and hadn't happened with my billing. Mostly hadn't. After spending about another half a day trying to get through, I talked with someone in UNM billing who said I couldn't talk with anyone else about my account because it had been turned over to the debt collection agency. Besides not helping or even trying to fix the problem they had created, they offered no apology for their failure to communicate or the time I had wasted or my lowered credit score. UNM Hospital claims that "integrity, accountability, compassion and respect" are part of their core values. I am disgusted by UNM Hospital's blatant refusal to take responsibility for their failed system. I am loathe to have any interaction with them in the future and will share my experience with others in hopes that they too, will not be blindsided by a lack of communication, courtesy and professionalism from UNM Hospitals.

I have gone to UNM for years and have had both good and bad experiences but nothing beats my visit Wednesday, October 21, 2020. I went in the ER because I couldn't breathe. Everyone I dealt with was amazing. They had me in a room in the ER within 15 minutes. They did chest x-rays, EKG, heart enzymes, heart ultrasound and CT scan within just a couple of hours. But the best thing was the doctor I had, Dr. Michael McAneny. He was amazing!!! He actually cared and was not like the other doctors I've had in the ER. When they finally were able to discharge me, he even came in and took out my IV and went over my discharge instructions. The nurse came in to do it and he said he had already done it and she even told him "You ROCK!". Please keep him on, he's an angel!!

I personally worked there for 2 three month contracts as a travel nurse from dec 2007 until June 2008. Loved it there! Staff was wonderful! They just don't have enough rooms throughout the hospital. Long wait times. But great system and management. Big Mike. Skinny Mike. Robert.
