I lived on the 1st floor of Self during the fall of 2019 and part of spring 2020. My experience with this dorm was mediocre. At least in my room, the shower was always cold, and my roommate submitted a service request, but it was never fixed. There were not enough washers and dryers on any floor of the dorm. On the first floor of Self, the dryers were never hot enough, and the laundry would often still be completely wet. Many of the people on my floor repeatedly submitted service requests, but nothing was ever fixed as far as I could tell.There was always a backlog of laundry on my floor because of the lack of usable dryers. Since it is an engineering-focused dorm, it is advertised as a way to meet fellow engineers, but for me, joining engineering-based clubs was just as effective in terms of meeting new people with common interests.nnThe rooms are very soundproof, and it is a fairly quiet dorm, which is a plus. The inside and outside of the dorm look very nice, and the common study areas are well maintained and clean, but in my opinion, Self is not worth it for the amount of money that you have to pay. If I could do my freshman year over again, I would have lived in Hashinger instead. Yes, it has community bathrooms, but it might have warmer showers!
One of the newest residence halls at KU. Every dorm room has its own bathroom. Every floor has its own TV room and studying places.
