This is a wonderful place to go hiking, you can do short hikes or 11 to 15 miles. Once you get out about 2 miles your usually alone. There is no shade unless you head to Palmer creek which is wonderful to visit in summer. If you like to get out and explore this best place un Kansas and it's FREE! Oh in one of the pastures there is a herd of Buffalo which are amazing to see.

Wide open spaces and lovely views. The trails do go up and down and get rocky in places. Make sure you wear good footwear. You have a choice of walking through the bison pasture or around it. Warning: you may have a close encounter with a bison if you choose the pasture.nnIt was cold and windy when we visited. I stopped by the Visitor Center to see if they had some gloves I could buy. They didn't, but they did have a pair in lost and found that I borrowed. After the hike, I gave them back for someone else to use. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Because it was late October on our visit, the grass was already brown and knocked down. Definitely will be returning during summer.

I love the Flint Hills of Kansas. There are over 40 miles of trails here, but you can take far shorter trails if you desire.nnWe encountered a large herd of Bison after walking less than 3/4 of a mile on the overlook trail. It was pretty amazing.nnThe views from the trail are breathtaking.nnAdditionally there is a farm on the property, that is a well preserved 1880's farm, which ran as a farm until the 1990's. The farm home could still be considered a mansion in today's standards, but is being renovated right now and so it is not open to the public. The 1880's barn is open and worth the visit.

Been here a couple of times over the last few years - there's always a knowledgeable and excited employee ready to share information about the Preserve. Amenities are great, and the trail itself is always well-kept. Excellent place to get lost for a few hours
