I wish there was a bit more information shared as well as a few more artifacts related to the operation of the mill.

When in Elkhorn, Iowa a visit to the Danish Windmill is a must! The windmill is the only authentic, operating Danish windmill in the United States. The mill, from 1848, was purchased from Denmark, shipped and reconstructed in 1976. Watch the 15 minute video so you can get a good background of the history. If you are brave, climb up to the top! It’s not too bad of a climb, just take your time! The gift shop was amazing! Fun to see so many Danish foods, holiday and gift items in such a small little town.

Nice selection of Danish decorations and things for Christmas. It's a few miles off the interstate but a nice stop. You can buy stone ground wheat from the wind mill, and fresh Danish kringle.

The hostess was a very kind and friendly lady. The gift shop is very interesting with lots of Danish foods and gifts. The mill is awesome! The old hand hewn timbers and ancient engineering passed down through the generations preserved for us to whiteness first hand. The ingenious craftsmanship is inspiring. The folks that lived all those generations ago accomplished so much with only their, hands, their minds and basic tools. A great little slice of European history and a window into the heritage of a strong rural community here in our own proud country. This is a great sight to see and a good way to spend a couple of hours learning about how things used to be.
