Love the Farmington Canal. Has shade and sun , i favor one over the other depending on the weather. Today i spotted a beautiful 1 and a half foot snapping turtle. Kept my distance but he allowed a photo from me. Its a beautiful trail but be mindful of your surroundings. If alone i tend to go behind stores and more populated areas. I usually do 3 miles, it keeps one mentally and physically fit.

The Farmington Canal is a gem. Miles and miles of safe, enjoyable biking. What a gem to have near the house.

You can trace the route of a longer former canal on this trail that passes through East Granby and Suffield, just to the west of Windsor Locks.nnThe Farmington Canal was completed in 1835 to provide a quick waterborne trade link between New Haven and Northampton.nnBut little more than a decade later, railroads were already cheaper and more efficient, and the exact route became the trackbed of what would later become the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad.nnThe line was abandoned in stages towards the end of the 20th century, and as of 2019 around 85% of the route between New Haven and Northampton is a trail.nnIn the north of Connecticut you’ll be able to access the longest uninterrupted section, at 24.6 miles from the border with Massachusetts down to northern Plainville.
