There’s 40 acres of restorative landscaped and untended greenery at the New Canaan Nature Center, containing an arboretum, botanical garden and nature preserve.nnThe landscaped spaces include a marvellous wildflower garden, in which 90% of the species are native, along with a herb garden and a perennial border growing hepatica, Jacob’s ladder, crested iris and bleeding heart.nnThere’s a 370-square-meter greenhouse to check out, while out in the natural areas you can explore two ponds, an historic orchard, wet and dry meadows, cattail marsh and wet and dry woodland.nnFinally the arboretum has a small but admirable collection counting Swiss stone pine, weeping Norway spruce and moss sawara cypress.

A lovely, wooded area for easy trail walking. There are many children programs as well as a small animal farm herb garden. A short distance from Grace Farm, the combination makes for a day walking trip. There is easy parking and a welcoming center that has information about all of the programs.

The New Canaan Nature Center may be the best nature school in the country with classes for preschool children and other educational classes for every age group including the surrounding community. The preschool teachers are required to have their masters while working on their doctorates in order to teach at the nature center. They make the learning fun and educational for the children who begin at age two and continue through age three or four. The Nature Center has vast areas of unspoiled land with long trails for hiking bee keeping maples syrup making aviaries swamps wetlands densely forested areas with huge old trees from which the children extract maple syrup. It's an enjoyable experience for all ages providing a haven from busy lives with the chance to commune with nature. It's a non profit organization established to help young and old learn about the environment. Subsidies are available for those who can't afford it. Located in a beautiful rustic setting conveniently near New York and surrounding towns the New Canaan Nature Center is a wonderful place to have an education especially before beginning kindergarten. It offers a happy environment for creating sound minds and bodies. I attended school there at the age of two and I loved it :)
