Difficult.. wear real hiking shoes. Rookie mistake not wearing actual hiking shoes lol
Awesome Trail to hike. Beware of rattlesnakes. Gets very overgrown at the entrance of the trail during spring and summer. Starting at Route 87 Trailhead, there is an extremely steep uphill climb for the first half mile. Then it levels off and travels across the top of the mountain before it descends into the valley created by Little Bear Creek. Drive another mile or two up the road and take a right turn up little bear road and there is another parking lot off the left about a mile up that road as well. Loyalsock Trail intercepts this parking area at about mile 4.5. About 2 miles above that area is the Smith knob overlook.
Love this trail, but the first 4.X miles require a lot of exertion that is jettisoned in a descent to near starting elevation with nothing but pride to show for it. Not much in the way of scenery or other things interesting that come in droves after the first portion.
Really surprised at this TH. It starts at a pull out off the side of a busy street. The pullout is just large enough for one car. At that point the trail starts and it jumps straight up. It levels off only to go very steeply up again and I mean STEEPLY up. At one point I was scrambling up on all fours. I thought when I crested the mountain it would level off, but, instead it tracks it's rise and manages to continue to go up hill. I was exhausted and covered in sweat. It is very difficult right off the bat.nnEdit: The above was my initial impressions of the trail head. I now know that it is well known that the Loyalsock Trail is really difficult if you hike it west to east. The first 5 miles have crazy elevation changes and are considered the hardest part of the trail. The parking lot is still too small. I updated my rating accordingly.
Trail head of the lt. Loyalsock rock is the first landmark. There are many more on that journey
