As a teacher, I have seen first hand how difficult life in public high schools can be for our children. There is an alternative. Living Wisdom High School builds on student's strengths, let's them explore what they are really interested in, and is a place where they learn an education for life. They succeed here, not just academically, but emotionally as well. They teach to the whole child, and help bring out the gifts each of them were born with. This school can be the spark that helps your child find their true self, their creativity, and a reason for waking up in the morning. You won't find more caring and compassionate teachers as you will find at Living Wisdom High School.

Living Wisdom Schools are the only reason I came to this country. In college, I studied different educational systems, especially alternative ones. Some seemed effective, but I was never fully satisfied with their approach. The students were either treated as if they all have same interests and background, or the academic results were too vague.nnHowever, I was fortunate to learn recently about the Living Wisdom Schools. They offer a personalized, supportive approach through which students, with the help of teachers, focus on finding their interests, strengths and passion. Further, teachers and students work together discovering each student’s purpose and how to use and offer their skills in the world so that a meaningful exchange happens. Meanwhile students have excellent academic scores.nnThe children also learn how to work and earn money toward goals, which is surprisingly less common now for teens than it used to be. They really receive an education for life — all of life.nnSeveral former students are attending or have graduated from some of the best universities in the country, including Berkeley, Stanford, UC Davis etc.nnI believe this is the best approach and the most helpful one for a teen who would like to learn how to meet life’s challenges.

Though Living Wisdom Schools have been around for about 40 some years, this is a brand new one starting in Palo Alto, just for high school students. I've been a fan of this approach to education for many years, having personally seen some amazing transformations in young people. (I don't have kids myself, but I've volunteered in the math program for a few years)nnThis school has a way of challenging students to do their best, but also supporting them as individuals. I appreciate that many schools say they do this. But I can say from long hours in the classroom observing the teachers how well they walk their talk. The way students learn to resolve conflict, the way they gain self-mastery over turbulent emotions, the way painfully shy children feel so much support that they become confident young adults -- I can't help but think every school could be transformed by this approach. If you know of teens who are not happy in school now, I can pretty much guarantee they will be loving it a few months into their fall term at a school like this one. I wish I'd had ANY teacher as committed to my development as all of these teachers are.

Great people participating at the LWHS. I always feel comfortable when I stop by. The students are bright and cheerful, and seem happy. The teachers and Kabir, the principal are all qualified and deeply concerned the well being of the students.

I've been associated with the Living Wisdom Schools for thirty years as a writer, photographer, web manager with a deep interest in educational change. The particular magic of the LWS schools arises from the emphasis on highly (extremely) individualized instruction - i.e., engaging each child at his/her individual level. Teacher training at LWS far exceeds any graduate-level program, with 1-2 years of full-time internship before being assigned a classroom. The result is that with individualized instruction, expertly done with love and kindness, each child can advance at his/her own optimal pace, with a very important secondary benefit that discipline problems are all but eliminated - since it eliminates the principal problem with a lockstep uniform curriculum: that a third of the class will be struggling, a third will be bored out of their minds, and only a third will be challenged at their level. It's why the 8th graders in the LWS TK-8 schools routinely place out of high school freshman math, often placing into third-year math. The LWS schools have walked their talk and proved their worth for 40-plus years. If I had kids I would unhesitatingly fill out an application.
