Church full of history and great service.

The Immaculate Conception Church, now located within the city of Steilacoom, had its beginnings at Historic Fort Steilacoom (1849-1868). Established as a US Army military base of operations in the Oregon/Washington Territories, Fort Steilacoom became a regional headquarters for the 4th and 9th Infantry Regiments. During 1856-1857, construction of wooden framed structures replaced its original log buildings.nnDuring this period of construction, a Protesant Church was provided soldiers and built on post. Intially a log building, it was replaced in 1857 with a framed chapel. The museum at Historic Fort Steilacoom is now located within this building.nnGiven anti-Catholic prejudice at the time, many soldiers funded the cost of materials and their own labor to build a Catholic Church in 1855. In historic photographs, the chapel building is located to the left of the row of Officer's Quarters (next to the Quarters 1 building at Historic Fort Steilacoom). The chapel can be easily located in the old photo by finding its tall tower. The tower is substantially shorter after the structure was rebuilt in Steilacoom.nnThis chapel served Catholic soldiers until the Fort closed in 1868. At that time, the chapel was moved to the town of Steilacoom where it was re-dedicated as the Immaculate Conception Church.
