My name is Nicole Marie Evangelista. Dr. Roman Hendrickson may not remember me, but I will never forget him. I was his patient 37 years ago. He saved my life when I was 4 years old at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, Florida. I had what is called epiglottitis, a dangerous form of croup. From what I understand, your epiglottis is inflamed with a poisonous sack, and blocks your windpipe. Surgery is difficult because the poisonous sack will instantly kill if it ruptures. At the time, it was rarely even heard of or treated with success. My grandmother told me that Dr. Hendrickson not only cancelled all of his appointments to focus on just me, staying up around the clock trying to figure out how to keep me from dying, the nurse said he was by my side when I was hospitalized and in intensive care for 3 days. Others said to give up, and that I wouldn’t make it because this was a very rare condition and no one in the state of Florida had ever survived...except me. Dr. Hendrickson never gave up on trying to save me. He is the reason I am alive and healthy to this very day.nnDr. Roman Hendrickson, THANK YOU for saving my life.
