THE BEST OPTION FOR INSURANCE PRE-LICENSURE ONLINE OR IN-CLASSnnIf you're seeking a way to earn your insurance license in the state of Ohio, I would absolutely recommend Hondros College of Business. This professional school is perfect for business-minded sales individuals who want to enter the insurance industry with or without prior knowledge. I am a recent graduate from the self-study course (with required proctor) in September (Property & Casualty) and October (Life, Accident, and Health), and a previous graduate from the in-class course (on campus for 40 hours a week) back in 2011 (no proctored exam required). Back in 2011 I left the state abruptly to go back home to Chicago (born and raised), shortly after passing Property Only. I allowed my 180 period expire before obtaining my license, and I never pursued my license in Illinois either. After returning to Ohio, I decided to give insurance another shot. This time I took 2 exams, with each test being combined. I paid $42 for each licensing exam through a proctoring vendor, PSI. I traveled to Sharonville, OH to take the exam on two separate occasions. There was another option in Troy, but I chose the Cincinnati area.nnAfter trying it both ways, I feel the best option for me was self-study. I loved the convenience of being able to underline the text in my book (like back in the day before all this computerized stuff!); plus I added on the CompuCram study tool. I got two different neighbors to proctor the 4 exams from home (on the computer) and I went back the day before my exams and got my documents in order to sit for the exam the next day. I enrolled in my P&C self-study course, studied for 5 days, and took my P&C exam and passed with a 72%. After passing, I immediately enrolled in my L&H self-study course, studied for 10 days, and took my L&H exam today and passed with a 75%. One observation I made was that the results of my categorized CompuCram practice exam percentages matched the results of my actual ODI exam. For example, HICs was my area of strength according to CompuCram, and I got 100% on that same section on the actual exam. The categories in which I failed to study and pass on CompuCram (due to time constraints) are the same categories I received low scores in correlation with the actual exam. Therefore, I would recommend using that software, as it mimics the actual testing environment. I completed most of the practice tests in the book as well as in the software. It was very helpful to do the proctored exam online vs pen and paper at the campus because I find that it also mimics the actual testing environment. My first proctor was nice enough to stay while I re-took my exams after failing the first and second times. It didn't take too long to retake and pass it. You can re-take it unlimited times. The second proctor didn't have to wait long because I passed the next set of exams on my first try. I believe because most of the knowledge was learned from the first course.nnI heard that there are new instructors now, different than the one I had back in 2011. That's why I cannot review that portion. I don't remember all the details. I just remember being exhausted at the end of every 8-hour day I had to sit in there. I couldn't keep still and looked forward to every break afforded to me. Lol. That's me in most classroom situations, that's why I prefer online courses.nnI have to admit that I certainly crammed the day of my exams, starting at 1am, with no sleep all the way up until noon. I took my official exam at 2pm the same day. It helped me to do my final review and retain the information better. I drove to the gas station at 1am, grabbed a large Red Bull, and took 2 caffeine pills with it! I was up and my eyes were open. I was able to concentrate better--more alert. I had to turn on three fans to keep me cool because my metabolism was going 100 mph! Whew! My heart flutters just thinking about it. I was definitely a nervous wreck when I arrived. Make sure you bring your photo ID, signed credit card, and pass certificate!
