I drove for James several years and he was the best boss EVER. He and his wife treats their employees very well. Its good to see that after 20 years he is still rolling. VETERAN friendly company!!!nThe pay is competitive though it could be better for the reefer driver. I was bringing home $1,100 a week after taxes and was happy with that. Benefits are so-so for a small company.nI was given a very used truck the first few months and at my 6th month with them, was given a brand new truck with everything I wanted. James asked me what I wanted and he got everything that I requested. EVERYTHING.nThough they did have their own in-house mechanic, they would send their trucks to a dealership for major fixes. So the Vandever fleet is well maintained. I did have an issue with the alternator going out and he took a good stance on it having his mechanic and then the dealership look at it. Both came back and said nothing was wrong with the alternator or battery. Three days later in California I left my hazards on for 15 minutes and came back to a dead truck which had to be jumped. I made it back to New Mexico before the alternator gave out and had to pay for roadside repairs. Upon getting back to company, James not only praised me for my intuitivness, but also paid me for my downtime and a full steak dinner.nSome other good things about Vandever Trucking is that they appreciate their good drivers. If your a good driver, pass a DOT inspection, work extra, take care of your truck, etc. they recognize and reward you for each and every thing. Not just once. I made an extra $25 per month for saving on fuel or passing inspections. Every few months i would receive a steak dinner or gift card for my extra work (within my hourly logs).nI dont have anything bad to say about this company. They keep their word, are very fair, considerate and is to this date the best company i have worked for. If your wanting to know why I left, it was due to stress and my PTSD.nRoutes were generally to Los Angeles, Bakersfield or San Diego, California and then back. Frozen poultry from Texas to California and then uou picked up fresh vegetables or fruit to bring back. I was given a dedicated route which was pretty good except for having to back down an alley and making three 90° turns in the process...just for one pallet of food wrappers! LA traffic is unforgiving to truckers though San Diego was friendly.nSo if your looking for an honest to God good company...Vandever Trucking is the best.

Dangerous drivers. Serious road-rage problem. One of them nearly ran me off the road on US 380 near Greenville. I was going the speed limit (perhaps less than 5 mph under since it was dark) and he came up fast from behind, about a foot from my bumper, flashing his headlights in my mirror, tried going around me in a no-passing zone with oncoming traffic (failed obviously), and continued to tail-gate me all the way through Greenville. I wish I could have gotten the number of the truck, but as I said, it was dark. This driver needs to be stopped before somebody gets killed.
