Court Street Baptist Church, founded in 1789, was burned down and rebuilt in1901 of pink granite quarried in Salisbury, N. C. This church is one of only two Baptist churches in this exuberant Romanesque Revival style in the nation.  The other is in Tennessee. The stained glass is also exceptional in its design, with yellow and shocking pink predominating. The windows go up the stairwells to the towers. When hit by full sunlight this creates a golden glow in the church that is quite unique. The church recently has received a Virginia historical marker. On November 10th. 2019. Pastor Dr. Wilber Kersey has been serving the church for 60 years and st 86 yrs old is still going strong. The church has No bell to Ring. But you can hear the bells of a church down the road. I went to this church to photograph and document a very beautiful historic church and its congregation.

THE BELLS...THE BELLS...I live in the Kirn building at the edge of Court St and High St. The churches next to my building ring their bells all day long!! They start ringing their bells at 7:00am and they ring every 30-40 minutes during the weekdays (I work nights sometimes) all the way until 10:00pm. It is insane to listen to when you are trying to sleep... But they decide that they need to ring them even more on Sunday so it is every 15-20 minutes on Sunday from 7:00am until 10:00pm. Is there anything you can do to help me? PLEASE!! I need SLEEP please.... According to the City of Portsmouth Noise Control Ordinance below it is illegal for anyone to use a loud speaker to draw attention to any building or structure which is what they are doing with their speakers. Please stop breaking the law.nARTICLE IV: NOISE CONTROL, Section 3.403: NOISES PROHIBITED - UNNECESSARY NOISE STANDARD Section 3.401: C. Loud Speakers, Amplifiers for Advertising: The using, operating or permitting to be played, used or operated of any radio receiving set, musical instrument, phonograph, loud speaker, sound amplifier, or other machine or device for the producing or reproducing of sound which is case upon the public streets for the purpose of commercial advertising or attracting the attention of the public to any building or structure.
