Joel’s instruction, advice, passion, and knowledge of the Columbia River was invaluable during the 2-day downwind clinic I participated in with my group. He’s extremely flexible and catered our experience based on the best conditions. His passion for the sport is contagious! He also spent lots of time talking with me on the phone before I arrived to get a feel for my skill set and to give me crucial information in preparation for the clinic. I highly recommend taking the downwind prep class and combining it with runs of various lengths. I’m really excited to be Joel’s client and I’ll be back!

The best way to get to know the wild and wavy waters of the Columbia River is to take a lesson, or series of lessons with Stoke on the Water. Joel is an excellent guide who knows the ins and outs of the river to make it a safe and fun trip downwind/up river. Whether you are looking for big waves on the Viento, or small bumps to practice your technical skills, Joel meets you right where your skill level is, and bumps you to the next level of your learning. Come with a good attitude, ready to have fun and be challenged to go to the next level in your downwind surf experience!

I have been a whitewater commercial guide for 12 years, and a commercial Sea Kayak instructor in the San Juan Islands for 5 years. I know the importance of instructors having proper insurance, being certified in their skill set and safety protocol, and providing good gear. Those are the basics. What sets an instructor apart is their consistent positive attitude, enjoyment of teaching customers regardless of their skill level, problem solving ability, and prioritizing safety without limiting appropriate challenges to increase skill building.nI have had multiple downwinding lessons with Joel. I can attest to his professionalism, knowledge of the sport, skill as a teacher, and his incredibly STOKED positive attitude. Joel was able to introduce me to the sport starting with the basics, then rapidly helped me to progress based on MY individual skill development.nJoel is a five star instructor, and a great guy in general. I have always looked forward to spending time with him because I know I'll come away with more knowledge after each session and will have had a great time on the water, in large part from paddling with him.

Best downwind guide in the area. Deep local knowledge of the Columbia and very experienced as a paddler and a coach. I've done multiple trips and will return as I continue to progress. If you're serious about learning to downwind safely and build your skills, Stoke on the Water can help.

Paddling in the Gorge is a unique experience. If you’ve been thinking about trying it, give Joel a call. His expertise, guidance and incredible Stokeness all work together to make your downwinding adventure something you’ll never forget!
