The Hunter Mountain Fire Tower

Really well maintained fire tower. The ranger station is usually staffed and offers amazing views from the second highest summit in the Catskill region.nAnd its a nice midway point to the trail... Devil's acre lean-to is nearby. The your choice of approach is from a shorter but steeper trail up the devil's path or the much longer but easier blue trail from the north side.

We are doing the fire tower challenge and completed the 5 catskill towers in two days. The Hunter mountain and overlook were done i the same day, hunter being first. We took the red trail which is around 4 miles and it is steep. You are climbing rocks and the incline just never seems to end. From the start until you reach the intersection and get to the yellow path, you are going uphill. We ended up taking the blue trail back down to see how it is and it’s only 2 miles. The blue trail is more popular as we saw a lot of people going up. Once we reached the parking lot we walked on the street for about 1.7 miles to the parking lot where we parked.

Great views, great day! Able to see the ski resort from here as well as many of the other great Catskill peaks!

Great view from high above Hunter Mountain, recommend checking out sunrise from here if you can get up early enough!
