James River High School

It seems as if only about half (perhaps even less) of teachers/faculty/administration genuinely value students’ wellbeing. Quite of few of the school’s rules aren’t even enforced. Many of the students aren’t kept under control and they don’t always receive consequences for their actions. Sex education is a greater priority than mental illness and suicide awareness which is a problem seeing as depression and suicide are two of the leading causes of death in the United States. These two topics have only ever been discussed briefly after the suicide of two students. Just as the end of the 2016-2017 school year, there was a huge fight that landed the school on the news. And to add to that, a science teacher was arrested for possessing child porn as well as rape charges. The biggest problem at James River is drugs. They’re more of an issue at this school than any other in Chesterfield County. The quality of the school has deteriorated since my freshman year. I’ve been here for three years and thankfully, graduation is just a few months away. Overall, this would not be my first choice for a high school or a recommendation I would give to anyone looking for a good high school.

This is not a good school. Last year I was shocked to see how widespread drugs are in this school. I had known before hand it is highschool and people tend to do really stupid things but did not expect this. Inside as a student it is incredibly easy to find out where to get drugs (if you dont believe me read reviews below mine) as i saw others do. I would even say that the minority (including me) has not had any contact with drugs. I do not know how the school hasn't cracked down on it more than they have since it is dumb teenagers who are ridiculously obvious vs the administration who should know how to deal with this. Towards the end of the year was when the school started to fall apart and did so drastically. There was a blackout for over an hour which i understand isn't predictable and not the fault of the school. Someone decided to let kids go to lunch like a normal day which resulted in kids jumping on tables and benches being thrown to block exits. Teachers and administrators had to run in between tables with lights of their phones to make sure everyone sat down. Next there was a huge fight which if I remember correctly happened the same week of the black out. I believe that doesn't need any explanation but if you are new to the story just look it up on the local news. Then there was a teacher who was a pedophile which also shouldn't need explanation. That was the first year for a new principal and I cannot imagine how hard it must have been for her. Good luck this year

I don't really know how to feel about this. Drugs and people making out nearly every corner. It's disgusting. Staff doesn't really know how to handle certain situations and take the most drastic measure possible. Other than that, it's OK.
