Sentara College of Health Sciences does not need to offer their Monitor Surveillance Course twice per year if there's a budget issue and they are not able to hire any techs. The patients who are on telemetry monitors lives are at stake when there are not enough techs to monitor each station. As a student doing clinicals, I witnessed this. The techs would do as best as they could, sharing the work, but they had their own patients to monitor. The techs were very helpful and would check on me, but the fact remains that they are short staffed. They also should not MAKE you pay for the certification exam if they do not recognize it. Why should they care if you're certified when they aren't going to pay you for being certified. I am content with the knowledge that I gained from the course, but not a fan of everything else. I can not speak on the other programs and courses they offer, just the one I participated in. I graduated from the April 2013 class. There were 12 of us that graduated. I know of one person who was hired at Norfolk General and another at Chesapeake Regional. If you are thinking about taking the class offered in August 2013, I'd rethink that decision. Unless of course you plan on moving somewhere else.
