I would totally give the doctor a 5* easy. He is amazing great bed aide manner. Very nice and takea his time to listen. But the girls who answer his phones and make appointments. He should get rid of these girls. Hire some compassionate people and we're not going to Triple booked him. They are very rude inconsiderate. They double and triple book. Dont even let you talk cut you off and hang up on you. We were sent over as an emergency from urgent care. And they had us wait for hours. We watched people come in after us go in and out. I understand there are other patients. But we were sent over as an emergency. They told us Urgent Care should have told us it was going to be a long wait. They absolutely did not. And if you have to make somebody wait 3 and 4 hours. You should not take them or refer them somewhere else or giving later appointment. I do not feel the doctor Costello knows what these girls are doing. We're making the appointments and answering phones I have never had to deal with someone so rude is this elderly lady who answers phones and makes appointments when we went to ask how much longer it was going to be the elderly woman was rude and very inconsiderate

Called the Rome location to set up an eye exam for my 9 mo old, when she found out her age the receptionist was rather rude and condescending saying that children don’t need eye exams until they’re preschoolers and know the alphabet etc. Even though right on their website it states children should have their first exam at 6 months of age. I told her we think my daughter has a lazy eye, and would like to have it evaluated by an eye dr. She just said we need to see our pediatrician first. Pretty disappointed overall. And will find a different eye dr to take my child to.

John Costello, Jr., DO performed cataract surgery on my right eye at Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton, NY on August 9th, 2018. He next performed cataract surgery on my left eye on August 14th, 2018 at the Griffins Surgery Center in Rome, NY (of which he is a part owner).nnWhen I first met Dr. Costello in his Hamilton, NY office on July 16th, 2018 (to aid me in deciding if I would utilize him for my surgery) he was impressively concerned and solicitous. This first meeting was what is commonly called in the medical profession a “meet and greet”. I have since learned that at least in the case of Dr. Costello, it should more appropriately be termed a “sales and marketing meeting”. He assured me that he would pay careful attention to my medical concerns and history of allergic reactions to various anesthesia medications. Further he said that I could rest assured that “he would treat me as if I were his own brother”. Now two months post surgeries I can only say god help his brother.nnOn my last meeting with Dr. Costello (on August 15th, 2018) I told him that I considered him to be “borderline incompetent”. My comment was prompted by the fact that although he claimed I could see perfectly after the surgeries, I could not, in fact, see very well at all. Additionally, I found that the little I could see at that time varied from hour to hour. I could not see well enough to drive and I could not then or now see well enough to read comfortably (even using the eReader that I have been using for the last several years). However, the most appalling part of his work was that he had neglected to transfer any information about my various allergies to anesthesia medications (one of which resulted in a cardiac arrest at the age of eighteen) to his own partially own Griffiss Surgery Center. Fortunately, the attending anesthesiologist was very good and carefully reviewed my long history of medical allergies (exactly what Dr. Costello had assured me he would do, but failed to do).nnThe assisting medical staff at both the Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton, NY and at the Griffins Surgery Center in Rome, NY was very good.nnAlso, on my August 15th, 2018 post surgical visit with Dr. Costello, he had the audacity to tell me that there was nothing wrong with my vision and that “I was simply being negative and refusing to acknowledge the great improvement he had made in my vision”.nnI was scheduled to have a final appointment with Dr. Costello on Monday, August 16th, 2018 but before that I chose not to do so because I no longer trusted a single word that he said. Instead, on the Friday before that scheduled appointment I went to see my optometrist who examined me and informed me that it appeared I had blisters in the retina of my right eye and a probable retinal detachment in my left eye. He further informed me that I needed to see a retinal surgeon no later than the following day or I risked permanent blindness.nnI have now had three visits to the retinal surgeon and an additional visit to my optometrist. The retinal surgeon has mostly repaired the damage. However, at my last visit to the optometrist he said “you will not want to hear this, but you now have a secondary cataract in your left eye”. I will have to continue to see the retinal surgeon to prevent that from getting worse.nnSo now (two months after my second surgery with Dr. Costello), I find that my vision is no better than it was before the surgery, rather it is worse.nnSo, if you were to ask me for my opinion about Dr. Costello, I would say, find yourself a more careful and attentive surgeon. Preferably one who actually cares about his surgical outcomes rather than one who clearly cares more about his surgical income.

There is absolutely no respect for your time here. Was an hour late taking my daughter in for her appointment which was the time she had to miss in school for this appointment. I am extremely disappointed in their lack of professionalism.
