When the Spanish arrived.nnIn the next violent blur of moments, the Spanish soldiers clubbed the Indigenous lady in the face, tore her screaming child out of her arms and hurled him into a fire. She was then dragged into a house and gang-raped.nnBy the time the day was over, she was running through a field naked and covered in blood. Alone, she had lost her son, her mother, her two sisters and her younger brother, all wiped out in front of her eyes, she says.

Funny story, was a museum named after Juan de Oñate, who was Spanish Governor of New Mexico. City of Espanola wanted to create a museum and monument honoring Oñate. Problem was they wanted to put it on San Juan Pueblo land. As it happened, Oñate is viewed by the San Juan Pueblo people as a Hitler. He massacred them, mutilated them by cutting their feet off, and was a general all round prick. He was so bad that the Spanish Government in the early 1600's actually recalled him and essentially fired him, yeah he was a bad guy. As you can probably tell, San Juan Pueblo said no way. So, the City of Espanola built it literally across the road from San Juan Pueblo. They commissioned a HUGE statue of the guy on horseback. Occasionally the feet of Oñate on this statue get cut off with a hacksaw and vanish. Nobody ever went to the museum, so it shut down. Espanola spent a lot of money to create a pointless monument which would only antagonize people, and then it shut down because nobody went to it anyways.
