I have one Meridian graduate and one current student - both are thriving. Meridian's academics are both rigorous and accessible. The integrated curriculum makes sense, and the students are invested in it - and in the school in general. The staff get to know each child well, and they are constantly working to refine and improve their courses. Students get a chance to learn about subjects from the bottom up and inside out – the learning sticks because it’s being made sense of (rather than being memorized). My Meridian graduate has gone on to receive compliments on his writing and his ability to analyze and synthesize information in college (and his grades are stellar after many years in a non-graded environment).
Meridian Academy is a great school for kids in grades 6-12. It uses an integrated project-based curriculum that teaches subjects in context. You don't just learn some math, you learn why the math was developed and how it is used in the world. English and social studies are similarly integrated to give the students multifaceted perspectives on social issues and history.nnThe school is small and has a high ratio of teachers to students, so the teachers are very accessible both to kids and to their parents. Everyone there is very kind (kids, teachers, administrators). There is an understanding that the whole child is developing, and the school's just isn't just to teach a disembodied intellect so it can pass some tests. This is a welcome break from many schools.
Best decision we could have made.nReal family/community environment. Younger kids have older mentors.nAs a 7th grader, he is already learning about Physics & engineering. He says these classes are the best ever. Math, Science, Technology classes are so hands-on! Additionally, they learn the reason for math like Algebra. Most schools teach subjects as unrelated silos of info. At the Meridian, the subjects are INTEGRATED.nThe school customizes learning (e.g., very small advanced Spanish class or coding class). Languages are 1 of 3 pillars of learning, so learning a foreign language is paramount every year.nNo loud bells going off, teachers are great, & students are able to be totally involved in their learning. They don't need an external reward system like grades. They want to learn & do their best. You don't just slack off & write a report to get by w/ a C. You actually learn to write, revise & master your topic. It is not about tests & grades; it is about learning!nRich Afterschool environment too with hiking club, rock band Tuesdays and Thursdays, theater every day, or you can hang out with the lizards or on the sofas doing your homework with others. You can create any club you want with others.nI really cannot say enough about how awesome and inclusive this school has been. Perfect and worth every penny! The school supports kids with 75% tuition assistance too.
The school is welcoming, and the community cares for each other. Teachers will support their students, and provide them with the resources to help them succeed.
Meridian Academy is a private school in Jamaica Plain where students do lots of projects and learn in fun ways. There are many student led programs. All the teachers and students are very nice and I met some of my best friends there. I would definitely recommend it.
