The remote northwestern islands of the Hawaiian archipelago possess an incredible variety of wildlife and are home to the largest fully protected conservation area in the United States.nnAnd since most people will never be able to experience this region firsthand, in 2003 the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center was founded to foster public awareness and bring ocean conservation issues to light.nnThe center is in the historic Koehnen building, dating back more than a century, with Hawaiian hardwood floors and a beautiful koa staircase.nnThe exhibition includes lots of interpretive panels going into the region’s biodiversity, artwork inspired by Hawaiian culture and authentic ambient sound.nnThe showpiece is a 3,500-gallon saltwater aquarium displaying some of the species inhabiting the coral reefs in the island chain.

The AC was not working when we were there. Our grandson enjoyed the feeding of the fish in the large aquarium and the interactive items in the museum. Can't beat free admission with a great welcoming at the front desk. They have restroom facilities. Parking can be an issue and you may have to park a good distance.

Nice place worth supporting as it seems like they do great stuff here and contribute to the community. Don't go here expecting lots of salt water fish though, as there is only 1 tank. Though it does have a nice variety, all things considered and is worth stopping in. The bathrooms are nice too, if you're passing by.
