We have done two one-day kayak trips with Peter, once when my children were 11 and 13 and recently when they were 15 and 17. Both were fantastic trips. He is very knowledgable and patient and his equipment is top notch, which makes a big difference (no plastic sit-on-top kayaks). He was very attentive to our skill level and how much we wanted to do in terms of pace/distance. Maine is the perfect place to sea kayak (we have done so in 5 or 6 places throughout North America) and a day with Peter will be one of your best days in Maine.
My son and i joined Peter in the spectacular waters off Stonington, ME for a two-day kayak exploration among the many beautiful and, for the most part, untouched islands in the Deer Isle Archipelago. It was truly spectacular and invigorating to see waters so clean and land so pristine and Peter made it happen for us!nnThe Kayaking was rigorous but completely accessible.. There are infinite route options and islands on which to explore, enjoy a lunch break, or set up camp so distances and # of hours paddling can vary to suit your stamina level and interest. The camping was a real treat and I would encourage others to consider this to get the full Maine island/wilderness experience...to see the tides change a couple of times, to see the fog lift in the early morning, and to taste how good camp coffee can be!nnA few words on Peter and Driftwood Kayaks:nnPeter is a professional with professional equipment: his paddles, boats, wet suits, camping gear, etc. are all top notch. (he has spoons made of titanium...no kidding).nnHe is appropriately safety conscious and is prepared (and prepares you) such that risks can be mitigated.nnSpeaking of prepared, the list of items one needs for a mere overnight on the water and in the woods is extensive and Peter had all bases covered.nnThe food on our trip was outstanding, healthy, and homemade and my 15 year old son and I thoroughly enjoyed every meal.nnThere is nothing about an expedition with Peter that feels commercial. He was our private guide and it seems this is how he operates. (When first looking into a trip like this, I was turned off by the possibility of traveling with 6 others; you wont get this on one of Peter's trips).nnBeing on the water and at camp with Peter was enjoyable as we found common ground in travel, family, outdoor adventure, and more.nnIf you're thinking about it, go for it!!
I highly recommend kayaking with Peter. He is an excellent guide, patient teacher and great company. The kayaking and camping experience with Peter was all I and my friend had hoped for! I hope to do it again.
This was one of the best experiences we could have hoped for on our trip to Maine and an experience of a lifetime. There couldn't have been a better way to experience the sea and islands of coastal Maine. Peter was a fantastic guide and his personal experience with Kayaking, his love for the islands and his care for the environment greatly enhanced the trip. Jeanie and I were both new to kayaking and his patient teaching and guidance made us feel comfortable and safe. Whether you are new to the sea or very experienced at kayaking, Peter would be the perfect guide. We look forward to an extended return trip including camping the islands! Steve Deters
