We love this place. It's my personal favorite as a parent who also prefers to enjoy (independently as an adult) as many of our weekend child activities as possible. There's really something special about this place compared to other local state forests. It has just that touch of wilderness to transport you, even though a highway is admittedly only a few minutes away. Lots of fun, great for kids and great for contemplation too!
Great way to meet up with friends and walk the dogs and keep up with social distancing we were lucky to have picked a beautiful day but there was still about 5 or 6 inches of snow still on the ground. What’s great about Cook County Forest Preserves is they do not apply salt on their road ways (which is great for the dog paws)
Very large forest preserve with paved trail for biking, walking, running, anything really. Extensive grass areas as well. Obviously the geese also like the grassy areas so watch for poop. There are several well kept bathrooms along the trail and all were open while we were there. For boaters, a few places to put in along the water. For fishermen, lots of areas to fish from throughout the trail, but check for limits, restrictions, etc. No issues finding parking, I imagine more crowded on the weekends. The trail is very narrow in my opinion, which will make navigating the trail difficult when it is crowded. Was probably 50/50 in terms of people wearing masks along the trail. You can walk off to grass to keep more distance. Little to no shade on most of trail so keep in mind during summer months.
Busse Woods is an amazing green space for the Chicago area. There are bike paths & picnic tables & forest & lakes & lots of open space. The path can get crowded on weekends when the weather is warm & sunny, but it's always possible to find a nice space to sun - or to trudge through the snow.
Nice place to go with kids. Plenty of open space. Went on warm sunny day. Liked the place. I would like to go there again.
