The Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia Community House and Interpretive center is a great place to add on your schedule while visiting the Southampton county area. The place is so fascinating because you will walk out more informed then the stuff you learned out of the textbook. While visiting I wasn’t just informed, the people and the environment were so diverse and friendly. I advise you to visit while you have a chance. Don’t miss out on a treat!
A Hidden Gem - The Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia Community House and Interpretive Center, located on VA route 58 in Capron is a community treasure. The Center is a beehive of activity in a sleepy little rural Virginia town. The tribal Center is housed in an historic brick house that was once a Masonic lodge. It boasts a high quality museum display chronicling the history of the Nottoway Indian Tribe from precontact to present times in their Barter, to Buffer, to Be exhibit. The Center is filled with artifacts and modern art by members of the tribe. The Center is also host to a thriving Nottoway artisan community. Members of the tribe participate in artistic and cultural workshops, taught by tribal members and by both artisans and leaders from other indigenous nations. Traditional crafts made by tribal members are sold at the Community House or next door in Gallery 1606, a community artisan store. The tribal center is a great destination or a fun stop on the roadway to the beach.
Go and learn about the Nottaway tribe
I have been honored on several occasions to attend the Nottoway Indian Tribal workshops. Upon entering the Community House I was embraced and welcomed, it was like coming home. Filled with history, and facts that could have been forgotten. The guest instructors, the laughter and food added to the fellowship. Its an experience that is near and dear to my heart. The museum and so much more. Thank you Denise and Chief Lynette and the wonderful members of the Nottoway. Wanishi, wëlànkuntëwakàn.
The Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia Community House and Interpretive Center, located on VA route 58 in Capron, VA is easily accessible from US Route 95 and well worth the trip! The tribal house is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the past, present and future of a Virginia Indian tribe from their perspective. The Nottoway Indians, described in some of the earliest written records of colonists and explorers, present displays in the tribal house that show a broad range of Nottoway art, history and tribal culture. The visitor experience is also enhanced by the presence of tribal members usually on hand to answer visitor questions. The Nottoway people at the interpretive center are pleasant to speak with and have a lot of information that make it a great visit for families with school-age children. This is also a very nice destination if you are planning to visit any of the colonial sites in the area, such as Jamestown or Colonial Williamsburg. You will get to see not only the colonial but also the native perspective. The Nottoway community house also has a small gift shop area where you can purchase Nottoway designed and made items of artwork, jewelry and pottery as well as books and videos about the Nottoway people of Virginia.
