If you go in winter be aware that there may be some icy sections. The Poor Mountain Overlook is relatively close to the parking lot, around 1.2 miles, but the cascades are a bit more difficult to get to. There's a lot of forested area so besides the main overlook don't expect a lot of viewing spots. The trail is fairly narrow so you'll have to move off to the side to let people pass (which can be a bit difficult in some areas)

Excellent day for a hike as skies are blue and the air is cool. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes and a walking stick is helpful but not required. A lot of leaves are down in November so footing can be slippery. Beautiful views and elevation change is challenging. This is not just a walk in the woods but a good workout.

Pretty over looks, decent maintained trails, only a few rocky moderately difficult sections that hiking boots would definitely help but not required. Definitely not bike friendly. Parking is limited to 10 cars with road parking not an option. The red loop is about 1mile, the blue/more difficult, is about 4m.nI would recommend, longer but easier than buzzard Rock, definitely easier than Sharp Top- Peaks of Otter. twice as long and more difficult than roaring Run.

Unsung gem 15-20 minutes from 419 on 12 o Clock Knob Road. Great hiking trails for a quick morning out and back. Trails are well marked and stone steps ease the gentle climbs and creek crossings. Lots of Mtn Laurel and Rhododendron along the way. And moss, I love the moss! Only drawback is the small lot-- only 10 parking spaces but we're usually the only ones there during the week. Travel down 221 even from Salem unless you like to pass on the one lane area of the the Knob road.

If you do the Piratebush, Cascade, Canyon, and Overlook trails together they make a nice ~3.5 mile loop with about 800 ft of elevation gain/loss. Note that of Sept. 6, 2020 the spur at the bottom to view the cascade is closed due to storm damage. Overall a moderate hike with steep sections. I would be careful with young kids as the trail in some sections is narrow with a steep drop. Only 10 parking spots, plan accordingly.
