Nice hike with my dogs. Moderate hike due to elevation and some rocky areas, otherwise easy. I’ve read parking could be challenging due to towing so we parked at Stephens trail entrance, this adds about 30 minutes to your hike. Granted when we arrived to the area cars would be towed it didn’t seem this was happening. I’m assuming towing may be a factor during the summer when more cars are here. My dogs were on leash due to concerns of Copperhead snakes but others had dogs off leash. Went in January and there were very few people out. We saw maybe 5 to 10 people on the trail.
We checked the weather and reached the starting point of the trail on time (sunny and warm). It's Rocky terrain is something unique. It was worth hiking 6.5 miles when you reached at the mountain top and got scenic view.
Incredible views even if winter colors are still dominating the landscape. Parking can be a tight during high travel times.
It was a gorgeous Sunday in the 60s around 2:00pm. We decided to try out Kennedy Peak Trailhead. There isn't much parking but we did find a spot. The trail entrance is directly in front of one of the two places to park. The first half of the trail is fairly wide with some rocks. You can camp alongside the trail if you want. There aren't any waterfalls or creeks. It was very dry and we heard some birds but didnt see any wildlife. It's a very peaceful and quiet trail. The further you go, the more rocks you walk on. I recommend bringing a bottle of water, do not run on this trail, be careful, and take your time. It took us a total of 3 hours to reach the end and come back. It is well worth it! At the end of the trail there is this incredible view from the top deck. There is some seating up there too if you need a break before heading back. Take photos! The trail is very peaceful, a great way to escape into nature, get exercise, and explore!
We went mid December and it was icy near the peak but only for a short stretch. We still made it to the fire tower at the peak and the view was perfect. Some steep and rocky spots, but not too hard at all for an afternoon hike!
