What an incredible experience - there's nothing else like it. The park is easy to navigate and offers lots of different trails, so you should be able to find something to accommodate everyone in your party.nnThe sands are truly beautiful as you walk through and explore them, and no they are not 'just like the beaches.' The surrounding beauty and coolness of the sands (we hiked it barefoot) were truly incredible.nnThe park also has pit toilets (which is 100% expected for remote parks like this one), which were well-maintained. Just make sure you bring water and snacks! They also have plenty of shaded picnic tables available for use. Worth the drive.
You got to give the national Park service credit. findings balance between opening things up for the public and making sure things are done more safely it's pretty tricky. They move the bathrooms outside, and created a separate lines for different areas. It was a pretty good deal. It was nice to be able to do stuff. White sands is always been a classic stop on any road trip going south.
Such a beautiful place!nI am in awe! It's been more than 25 years since I've been here. The weather was perfect and we caught the sunset! The dunes are beautiful! There was some trash left by people which is disappointing. There were trash cans everywhere. The bathrooms were plentiful and clean. I would recommend this highly! We saw many different license plates. The size of White Sands is amazing! Bring your own water etc. You bring it in and pack it out! There are nice little picnic areas and they also have grills. Enjoy your visit here and be safe!
We wanted to get out of the Colorado cold, and ticking another National Park off our list seemed like the perfect way to do it! Plenty of space to hike around, and the scenery is unbeatable. Make sure to put on sunscreen, as the sun reflects off the white sand and can give you a good burn. Loved the 1-mile nature loop walk, with plenty of fun signs to learn about all the creatures that live there. Also love that dogs are welcome everywhere, which isn't the case with most National Parks.
My new favorite national-park-most-people-haven't-heard-of!nnWhite Sands is so tourist-friendly and accessible. The trails aren't far from the beaten path, the visitors' center and gift shop provides everything you'd need, and the sand is just gorgeous and so fun to explore and play in!nnIf possible, purchase and bring your own plastic sled before visiting- the park sells them at $15 each (and buys them back for $4), but you can purchase them online or at sporting goods stores for $10 or so.nnMake sure to use sunblock, since the sun reflects brightly off the sands! Also bring plenty of water and high energy snacks. Trekking through the soft sands really takes it out of you, since you keeping sinking a little and have to use energy to continuously pull up and through.nnThat said, the sands are wonderfully satisfying to play in! They're beautifully white and have lovely texture- like the kinetic stuff they sell kids in packages! We tried sledding, but it isn't as slippery as snow is. Next time, I think we'd try getting some sled wax either online or at the gift shop and see if that helps our sliding experience any. Even if you don't try sledding, the sands are so nice to just be in! I could sit in it and just wriggle around for a long time. :)nnHighly recommend for kids of all ages!
