Every private institution has the right to set its own policies, within the law. However, St. Peter School's insistence that non-Catholic students attend the school mass once a week is unfair at best, and exclusionary and discriminatory at worst. I went to Catholic school from Kindergarten through high school, in two different schools in the city. There were weekly masses, of course. Most students went. There were always a few non-Catholic students who chose not to, however. Their wishes and their parents' wishes were respected. They rested in homeroom or hung out in the library for 45 minutes a week. No problem. Why is it a problem for Saint Peter's? I'll never know because I feel like my daughter will not be welcomed there. At a time when more people are turning to private education, this school's policy is a great disappointment.
