Right outside the library, you'll see a large conifer that is bare in winter. It's one of the largest Dawn Redwoods in the nation and a spectacular specimen. These trees, along with the California redwoods and sequoias, are the only three extant species of redwoods. This species, which unlike other redwoods is deciduous, was thought to be extinct but was rediscovered in a small forest in China in the 1940s, and seeds were brought to New England. Another notable specimen is at the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard and there is a charming little forest of them at the Bayard-Cutting Arboretum on Long Island. This one, though, is the finest. Don't miss it.
