Nachusa Grasslands in a fantastic place and the visitor center is very nice. It's a huge place, so the bison are not always visible from the center. There a short path to do a little walking while there, and a lot of educational info posted all over the shelter. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

This isn't just a park. Many choose to describe it as a religious experience. I wasn't there to see them start the prescribed burn. I saw the smoke of it all day. I arrived at sundown to see the fires progress across the dead grass. This might be the boldest experiment I have beheld and allowing nature to have its way. I didn't see the bison yet but I felt their presence. You can be certain I will be returning again and again to this fine example of nature close to home. The work being done here mostly by volunteers grows more and more essential. Literally, trends and global warming and urban agriculture mean that much of our cropland can return to Prairie or Savannah or Forest. These four thousands acres are of first fruit of the world to come.

Nice place to stop an enjoy the beauty of the vast prairie. You might see the bison herd, we were fortunate to see them. We hiked with our snow trac on, as it was icy. The bathrooms were clean and have composting toilet. Stop on your way to Franklin creek state natural area.

Was cool to see the Buffalo. Will definitely check this place out when warmer weather is around.
