We couldn't have asked for a better experience. Our tour guide Abby was extremely knowledgable and made the tour extra fun. Even though it was a lot of walking (you definitely get a workout!), our boys ages 4 and 9, were excited and engaged the whole time. We made reservations online ahead of time and it was nice to just share the experience as a family and not be on a group tour. Everyone in the gift shop took time to show our boys neat things and continued to teach them even after our tour had ended. They had the best time and it was definitely a highlight of our trip. Well worth the time and money!nSome things to know ahead of time: You cannot take purses, backpacks or jackets in the cave. Be prepared to walk a lot including stairs! Prepare your kids for no touching inside the cave. It's stunning inside and hard to not want to touch the formations! It's sad to see some of the damage caused by irresponsible tourists.
We had a great tour with Abby. The groups for the Horseshoe Lake tour are smaller than some other cave tours in central Texas, so it felt more intimate. They're not kidding about the stairs - wear comfortable shoes with good traction, and no need to bring a jacket. You can visit the gift shop to buy refreshments (including fresh fudge) and souvenirs. This was a fun, educational, and beautiful way to spend part of our spring break.
The caverns are gorgeous, the gift shop is great, and the campground is a nightmare run by a woman with anger issues. I highly recommend you not wear your jacket on the cavern tour because they literally won't let you take it off (the caverns are quite warm). Also, if you are somewhat disabled, expect to have the tour guide get peeved for slowing everyone down. It's amateur hour -- family owned. We have been there 3 times.
Just went to Cavern of Sonora for the first time today March 21, 2021. The staff was extremely friendly, the caves were easy to find, and they are so neat inside. My cave tour guide was Bill. He was such an amazing guy, and he was so knowledgeable about the caves. I highly recommend coming here. The whole experience was absolutely lovely.
If you are traveling I-10 near Sonora, TX, you should stop and see this cavern.
