Very disappointed in this practice.Dr.Michael Akerman was good for the most part. But I will no longer be going there due to an experience that I recently had.I was diagnosed with shingles at an urgent care clinic.Went to Dominion Internal medicine in horrible pain, unlike anything I have EVER had in my life.Saw the N.P. there, and she alsonconfirmed the diagnosis.gave me gabepentin for nerve pain and also hydrocodone.Went home took as prescribed. Some relief but not long.went back in still the worst pain. She perscribed dilaudid. That didn't do much at all.finished Oxycodone, and after about 4 weeks of battling this absolutely still no relief. Was in tears it hurt so bad.Had also gone to ER.where they gave me valume, which did nothing. Long story short the NP ordered an in house drug test, not even telling me but I had no issue with it,because there was nothing to hide.drug test came back positive for benzodiazopines. Was Absolutely shocked since I hadn't taken anything other than what was prescribed. So I call them to find out if they had called in the script for Oxycodone and was told they couldn't prescribe any pain meds until the test, which they were sending out came back.No one called me about this,I had to call.the test came back negative. Which in the meantime I had gone to urgent care to get a drug test and it was negative.an in clinic drug test.so still in the meantime horrible pain. She referred me to a neurologist. But still in the meantime taking Ibuprofen like I would eat candy.they also said they would try to get me into a Dr. that I had called earlier, but that didn't happen. They acted as though you're in pain,Oh well. And made me feel like an addict just seeking drugs.VERY,VERY DISSAPOINTED in this practice.I am 62 yrs.old and the last thing I was doing was seeking medication just because.Perhaps if I had of seen Dr.Mike the outcome wouldn't have been this way,but he was out of the office.I have never been treated this way by any doctor,NP,PA,Nurse,or medical assistant in all my years of going to the dr.My biggest disappointment was Ms.Springer, and the tech. they did not tell me they were doing the drug test.just brought in the cup and said can you go pee.To me it seemed as though they were eluding to me taking something I wasn't prescribed. And I was told by a PA that valume can stay in your system for up to 2 months. And also an excessive amount of Ibuprofen can also cause a false positive for benzodiazopines. So who's right and who's wrong? So thanks to Dr.Mike for being a good Dr.Still in a good deal of pain.Just trying to deal with it,until I see the neurologist and find another primary care.Really sad the way I was treated. And the Lyrica did nothing. Just hoping there is something to get relief from this horrible pain.8 weeks and counting.
Dr Ackerman is Great! He helped me when other doctors ignored/didn't interpret test results correctly or wanted me to pay through the nose for crazy costing prescriptions from companies they were in cahoots with. As in these pill pushers sell the stuff right at their office... Ackerman is through, pleasant, current on all the latest medical tech, listens, knows what he's doing, Goes out of his way to work with your insurance provider. What more do you want? He doesn't try to run up the bill with tests tests tests either... If I were to find fault It would be with a couple of his staff. One is very curt and snippy others seem to lack an attention to detail.
Dr. Ackerman was a wonderful doctor for my parents. He treated them with respect and listened to them when they wanted to discuss concerns or options of treatment. I was so impressed with his knowledge and his caring nature that I and my SO both see him now. His staff is nice and professional as well.
I consider him a good friend first, because he treats me that way. He is noticeably busy, which is a good sign that he is in high demand, but you will have to wait. I appreciate his depth of knowledge, but even more his understanding of his limits--a necessity for this kind of doctor. He has helped me greatly in numerous ways. He's a good man and doctor.
Dr. Ackerman is our family physician. He's been great for all four of us. He's very caring and compassionate. Takes time with you. You never feel rushed. Explains things thoroughly. Always very pleasant as is the entire staff at Dominion Internal Medicine.
