Built in 1872, this building served the people of Newington in many ways throughout the years. Prior to the construction of the Stone Schoolhouse, the first floor housed a 2-room elementary school. It has also served as a meeting hall & office building, as well as a social function hall for the Piscataqua Grange. The signboard for the building was actually intended for a ship built at the Shattuck Shipyard. They had been commissioned to build 20 steamships for WWI. The fourth ship they had completed, the Navy discovered there was a ship already in service called Newington, & were forced to rename it. The Old Town Hall would soon fall out of use with the construction of the Pease AFB in 1957. Following some renovations in 2005, the building has returned to active use, providing a space for youth groups, plays, concerts & more.nThe Old Town Hall is a contributing property to the Newington Centre Historic District, a US Historic District, & is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
