**this is an update from a previous 2 star rating**nThe DeSoto House is a local gem, and just the beauty and history of the building itself is more than worth a trip and stay in Galena. The hotel administration staff and kind and the atmosphere is cozy yet luxurious, truly not to be missed.nPreviously I had some issues with the service at two of the hotels three restaurants, which was bad enough to warrant a 2 star review. However, given the wonderful generosity, kindness and strength this facility has shown to its local community and visiting clientele I can feel good about editing and giving DeSoto House a 5 star review.

While in town for a short weekend getaway, the DeSoto House hotel offers a wonderful glance at one of the most historical places in the United States. As the oldest continually running hotel in the country, you get a rich sense of heritage and warmth from this all important gem.nIf ever in the area of Galena, Illinois, this most certainly should be on your list to visit. You don't need to be a history buff to appreciate the incredible backstory of this hotel and the changes it's experienced to date.

Awesome place to visit. Best pulled pork nachos I have ever eaten and after you eat you can walk the halls. I am a history lover so walking the same halls as Lincoln and Grant was an experience I revisit a couple of times a year

What a great place to stay and dine. Holy cow....John at the front desk is AMAZING!!!! My adult granddaughter and I are on our first trip to Galena. We kept going down to the front desk with questions and John was just so kind and very informative on the area. We are already planning on coming back with our spouces. We ate dinner in The General restaurant...Marcos was our server. What a gem he is. We really enjoyed his service. We hope he is there tomorrow night when we return. I had the red snapper which was so amazing and my grand daughter had the salmon. TOP NOTCH!!! The bacon wrapped shrimp for an appetizer....HOLY HECK....we have never had anything so amazing. A must have!!! We are here two more days....can not wait to see what Galena has to offer. The Desosto House alone is worth the trip.
