Good place ride your bike and walking
Nice rail-trail built on old railroad bed that stretches 11.5 miles from Centennial Park to end of trail at Irwin Bridge Road. Three designated parking areas, two of which have chemical toilets, bike stands with air pumps and basic tools for emergency repairs (Centennial Park and Stuart Dog Park at the 5.5 mile marker). Third parking area on north end, mile marker 10.5 adjacent to Cantrall Creek Road. Additional bike stand / pump on path north of tunnel at mile marker 9.0. The path is generally level and well-shaded. Scenery varies from flat, open corn fields to shaded paths and river / creek crossings. The Sangamon River bridge offers great views and is a popular rest stop to take in the expansive views of the river valley from high above the river. Road crossings are marked clearly and cross less-travelled roads. Busy roads are crossed via bridges and one tunnel. Archer Elevator Road crossing has more vehicular traffic and is equipped with a motion sensing signal light that flashes yellow to alert vehicles to your approach. Nice touch!
Great trail. 11.5 miles completed so far. End is rather anti climactic but can see future possibilities.
This is my favorite trail. I plan on using it year round.
