Home sweet home. Beautiful older Catholic Church. Attended St. Joseph Catholic School as well many years ago in the 70's. Located in a nice quiet location on lower Northside. Was a very popular Church n School for many, many years and generations of families continued sending their children and grandchildren to St. Joseph's Parish. Many fond memories I'll treasure forever. So many nice priests n teachers along the way. Monsignor Lilly, Father Thomas, Father Cooper, many BVM Sisters that kept us in line in my youth as well as great teachers from Ms Persinger, Mrs Fleming, Mrs Smith, Sr. Joel ( the enforcer ), whom I kept a relationship with in my adult life as she visited my parents home many times, Mrs. Dawes, whose bright blue hair was her halo I told her, God bless her I don't know how she kept us in line but she did,, onto Mrs. Calhoun, Beth was a very firm woman and teacher whom I realized there was no pulling anything over on this teacher. Lol. I found out quickly she was born to be a teacher and a very good teacher. I credit her for setting me straight n helping me grow up, stop the goofing around, act your age, be respectful of others. Sports comes 2nd. Being a good student and respectful of others, stand up in front of a class or group and speak to the group not just one person, she eliminated the phrase (and um) in our vocabulary when voicing out what you read was all about. Didn't we all say that 1000 times. Beth was probably my most admired and respected teacher (along with Sr Joel), that I had in my youth. I never got the chance to tell her this as I continued on but I knew she was destined to be a leader and she later became the Principal. A position and title that truly fit Beth ( Mrs Calhoun). She taught me so much. Not just in academics but in life as well. To be respectful, DO NOT TALK BACK, help others if they need help, hold the door open for others most notably adults, teachers, and most definitely for ladies. Opened the car door for many girls, young ladies, and woman Beth as I grew into a young man I'll have you know. You be proud to know. Lol And if she couldn't get you in line by god, which she never had a problem doing ever, her husband John worked at the Correction Center as a P.O. or a counselor for troubled youth or something along those lines, and by god he would. I just knew I didn't want to have to visit him as a 12-14 yr old kid. Lol. And I never had to. No offense Mr. Calhoun. A great couple of teachers in their own right as well as great parents and I'm sure as grandparents. Two people who were good at what they did. Intimidating ? Heck yea !! at times. Much love and respect to Mrs Calhoun. Thank you. Then my last 3 yrs flew by way too fast. Sr. Geraldine was next and you couldn't help but love her. I really liked her a lot . Her errand boy. After school or weekends too. It didn't matter.I could hear that yell of hers ( Miiiiiiiichaellll), and I ALWAYS came to her beckon call l as I lived close to the rectory, church n convent. She was firm as well but truly a blessed woman so devoted to her faith. Then it was Dan S. then Gary S., two men which wasn't the norm but two teachers who kept us in line as we approached high school and prepared us for the next level. Both good teachers and coaches of our school athletic teams in one way or another. I hope life treated them well as they treated me pretty well I must say. Thanks Dan, Thanks Gary. St. Joseph's Church and Parish is a beautiful place to attend to worship god. My memories are everlasting. Not even a fire could could take down this wonderful place. I'll never forget my mother calling me and she was so frantic the church had caught fire. I quickly got home picked her up took her the one block over and that's when I seen how bad it looked and how important it was to so many. Mom was with a group of older ladies and the tears were flowing by all. I seen what it meant to these older folks who all belonged to the parish and attended school here way before my years. My brother and I comforted mom. And St. Joseph lived on...
I attended an Oriental Mass here and even though I don't understand the language, I was able to follow along with the service.
A must go place gorgeous area.My son loves going here. The location is great very great set up
