There are numerous institutional inefficiencies with this practice. If you are trying to change a dose for a prescription, or discuss health matters with your physician assistant, you have to endure multiple channels to receive relatively simple answers. Typically, this practice treats the patient not as a customer, but as a means to an end. The patient very rarely holds discretion in matters of their own health, and the physician assistant wields considerable control over what the patient is allowed to do or not to do. I do not recommend this practice to people who want control over their health decisions, and seek efficient health solutions.

My wife choose Dr O as her doc. When she became seriously ill, Dr O was awesome! When the specialist where racking up fees with no answers, I called him! He saw us right away and personally made calls and got us seen by the right specialist the next day. He Listens, he cares, he is human. I was so impressed that he is now my primary doc!

I called today truly needing an appointment. Of course I assumed I wouldn’t be able to be seen right away. I called, let her know I would be a new patient. She put me on hold letting me know that she would take a look at her cancellation list, she got back on the phone and said “you’ve been here before right?” I said no..... she then proceeded to say that I would not be seen until November. 1. I physically and mentally can’t wait that long. 2. She seemed kind of off putting so I would rather not. I don’t recommend.

As a physician and former president of the medical staff at Virginia Hospital Center I have known Dr O'Donnell for decades and observed his patient care as a colleague and patient. He is one of a dying breed of MDs who knows intimately and cares about his patients. He is obsessive enough to not miss the subtleties that could make all the difference in your health.
