Founded in 1805, Monterey is a small town on the East bank of the Kentucky River near Lock and Dam #3, between Frankfort and the confluence of the Ohio River at Carrollton. For well over a century the Kentucky River was a major transportation corridor and Monterey was a busy little town.nnIn it's heyday Monterey was home to many businesses including a post office, hotels, saloons, a drug store, grocery stores, a barber shop, a furniture factory, coffin maker and most notably, the grand W. D. Hardin Dry Goods Store. The W. D. Hardin Store even had an elevator in 1873, quite remarkable in it's day.nnAs time went by, railroads became a more efficient means of transportation and inland rivers, like the Kentucky became less important means of transporting people and freight. In the latter half of the Twentieth Century, automobiles and trucks began to replace the railroads. As times changed commercial traffic on the Kentucky River dwindled, and had ceased altogether before the dawn of the Twenty-first Century. Today the Kentucky River no longer has a significant economic impact on the town of Monterey.nnThe 1900 census recorded 375 people living in Monterey. The current population of Monterey is approximately 130 people.nnWith such a small population, many towns are unlikely to have a building dedicated to use as a City Hall. Monterey is fortunate to have the once oppulant home of the former W. D. Hardin Store for it's City Hall.nnThis facility is not open on a regular basis other than once a month on the third Tuesday at 7:30 pm when meetings of the City Council are held.
