College Illinois!

College Illinois is the best investment I have ever done. I paid $3600/yr for 10 years=$36,000 starting when my son was 6 years old(2001). He is going to be a Junior in a private college, and in the past 2 years I have received about $30,000 as payment toward meeting my sons private college education. He should get 2 more years of coverage provided the state can get it's budget in order. When he was about 10, the state even let me deduct some of the expenses. Great, great program for me and my son!!!

Buying into College Illinois for my twins was the best financial decision I have ever made. They attend a state university. I have never had an issue with College Illinois paying the tuition and mandatory fees. Without College Illinois, both kids would have had to take out substantial loans. With College Illinois, my husband and I are able to cover their room and board and misc. costs. Both are on track to graduate without loans.

My parents paid for 2 years into this program for me. I am currently in school and almost finished. They have been pretty great about paying for things. I have ONE BIG PROBLEM. My school gives me a 20% legacy discount since my father graduated from the same university. Originally a year ago, we were told that I would be credited back this 20%. I planned my studies and finances around this. Recently, we were told by another employee that my discount does not matter. Now I will be paying for my last semester through loans or out of pocket. Basically, they are the ones who benefit from my discount, not me. I would be less upset if I had known from the beginning that they would not credit the 20%. It is too late for me to get scholarships for the next semester. Make sure you really understand your benefits.

If your child does not go to college in Illinois then you have a problem. The processing of the payment takes 6 - 8 weeks after you submit the invoice and courses your beneficiary is taking. If the individual is waitlisted in any of the classes the credit hours will not be counted. I have to pay the full college fee to avoid late fee and finance charges. I get back the college illinois payment from the university as overpayment 3 months later. Not a great option if your child/beneficiary has a possibility of going to out of state or private colleges.

College Illinois has always paid the covered part of tuition on time and with no problem. I had 2 children covered when it became clear that 1 of our children would never get to college. His payment was refunded in full along with earned interest. My experience has been nothing but favorable.
