Wow, location hidden but manageable. Lots of RV's and camp grounds. Long trails. top wooden trails, ponds lots of birds, we saw lizards, snakes, alligator, birds feeding station, fresh animals tracks; bod cats, raccoons, coyotes, hogs, and others. Trails are safe stay on the tracks. We did get to see all but part 2 next time. You would need to come and see for your self. Come at your own risk. Happy trails.
This is a great state park for bird watching and for animal viewing. The trails are all either boardwalk or crushed gravel. Despite 3 days of drizzle, the trails (about 5 miles total) were not muddy. There is a $5 per person admission fee, which seems very reasonable for the beauty you can enjoy. For serious birders, there is even a checklist of the over 300 species of birds that can be found here (depending on the time of year you visit, of course). For nature lovers, it’s a great way to get some exercise and spend a few hours.
Staff was friendly and actively engaged with my group making it a more rewarding visit. Wide trails are easily accessible. There is little to no elevation change unless you go up on the levee. The bathrooms are nice and there is a large deck overlooking a pond that is always full of a variety of ducks and other water fowl. I saw big variety of birds and two large alligators. There were huge herons and pelicans inside the floodway. In the area that used to have mobile homes there were many small birds and several chachalacas. Great for serious ornithology as well as just taking the family for a nature walk.
I loved that this state park has bird feeders all over the place to get to see so many different birds that Texas has! I enjoyed walking around the clean well marked trails/paths. What a beautiful place to come be one with nature and get outdoors. I only wish I could've seen an alligator.
Beautiful, well maintained park. I loved the observation deck at the welcome center. All the trails were well groomed. We had a lovely afternoon!
