It's closed, but the restrooms are open.

We visited here yesterday during a picture-perfect sunny fall foliage day coming down off the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Visitor's Center was closed but the restrooms were thankfully open. A leisurely walk across the James River to the Historic Locks with illustrated signs made us thankfully for being outdoors. Well worth the stop as well as the Otter Falls and Lake a minute drive further up the road.

The visitor center itself was closed when I got there on my way traveling Blue Ridge Parkway. The bathrooms were however open.nnThe area is very beautiful overlooking James River with picnic areas with benches and table. The Visitor Center is very close to a bridge for cars over the river but there is also pedestrian bridge beneath it. From the same area you can take walking trails. In addition, there are overlooks with magnificent views.nDo not miss stopping if driving by. You would not regret it.

This center itself is usually closed and even the restroom has a very limited season for being open and there is not a lot of information for travelers here which is a shame. Visitors always ask me how to get to any restroom or food for their family as there is no information on what is available in the area and they are driving right near wonderful things and missing them. However, the visitor center has many wonderful reasons beyond the center itself to be a highlight of the area. Favorite is there is a pedestrian bridge to walk beneath the parkway bridge over the James River! Beautiful at sunset especially! Across the bridge is a short path to historic locks along the James. Back on the visitor center side there is the trail of trees, a large picnic area along the James with views of the mountains, and the trailhead for Otter Creek Trail which as long as water is not high is one of the lovelier hikes you'll find.

Beautiful area. Except for some elevation changes on some of the trails. Nice place to go for a quick hike. At the time sadly the visitor center was closed.
