Nice visitor's center with brochures and hand made items by local artists for sale. Has some local antique items and fossils on display as well.

Didn't get to visit the visitor center because we got there at 5:00 and they closed at 4:00. Did visit a lovely antique store across the street. Got there right at closing but they let us come in and shop. Very nice store. Very friendly shop owners and a friendly dog! Told us about the New Port Comfort Lighthouse so we drove down to see it. Mathews is a quaint little town. Would like to go back when the shops are open.

As far as visitor centers go, I was unimpressed with information. The local craft and art pieces were amazing, and it felt more like a gift shop than information center. There were a few brochures and a badly lit exhibit in the back. The staff was friendly and the bathroom was clean. There were some locals hanging out inside that were helpful to tell us where we could go that was public.

I passed through this quaint town while looking at a house for sale on the bay. I stopped to take photos because of how picturesque this town was. When I opened my car door to get out, I was pleasantly surrounded by a whole host of invitingly amazing smells from the restaurants near the Mathews Visitor Center, which charmingly doubles as a general store...complete with rocking chairs on the generous front porch! I intend to return when I have time to browse the shops, investigate the library's offerings, & share a meal at one of the delicious-smelling restaurants. This town looks like it emerged from a romantic comedy's movie set, built to show a perfect Southern town!
