My wife and I came back to Winchester for our annual family Thanksgiving celebration. On Saturday, November 26, at 1:30 in the morning, my wife began having a heart attack. We called 911 and the ambulance arrived within 22 minutes. The EMT took an electrocardiogram with a portable device, loaded her into the ambulance and did another electrocardiogram and concluded she was in serious condition. It was his opinion she needed to get to a hospital in Lexington ASAP. We agreed. We later learned that only recently had the supervisors of the ambulance service authorized the drivers to take cardiac patients directly to Lexington without first taking them to the hospital in Winchester. The wisdom of the administrators saved my wife's life. Thank you. The EMT gave her aspirin and nitroglycerin. The cardiologist told us that care saved her from having any permanent heart muscle damage. My grief is that I did not write down the names of the two EMT men who acted in the highest tradition of emergency professionalism. Just a week after the elephant sat on her chest, she is having a full and complete recovery.
