After moving back to Illinois this summer, I needed to transfer my license and title and register my car. The Stephenson County DMV is running much, much more smoothly than it used to when I was a kid growing up in Freeport - the employees are quick and courteous, even on a Saturday, which is probably their busiest day. There was an issue with the spelling of my name on my license, and when I called about it, Kara promised to get me right in when I came back. She took care of everything quickly and politely. Would go back to this DMV any day. The wait can be long, as at most SOS facilities, but they have you wait outside and require masks inside, and when they are fully staffed, things move pretty fast.

The employee who helped me with getting an Illinois driver’s license copied my address incorrectly onto my new license. I called to see how they could help correct this error in a timely manner and they said I would have to wait until the new license came in the mail 2 weeks from now and bring that in. After communicating my displeasure at that solution, I then received a call from another employee stating that I could come in ASAP and they could correct it. Funny how that was all of a sudden a possibility after I was originally told I had to wait. During the driver’s license process I was asked if I wanted to be registered as a voter and I stated that yes I would. Then when I checked online to see if I was registered, it says that I am not. The incompetence of the employees here is truly mind blowing. Some re-training and accuracy improvement is much needed considering the importance of the processes being completed at this facility.

I renewed my drivers license today, June 2, 2020 at the Freeport facility. I felt I was well prepared for the visit. My proof of residency was the letter from the Secretary of State I received in the mail as required under Group D. (line 9). Susan, the employee assisting me, then wanted another document with proof of residency and then proceeded to tell me, my zip code was not in the Freeport area and I would need to go to a facility with my zip code. I left the facility and went home to tell my spouse that we would have to go to the Chicago area for my renewal. He went to the Sec. of State website and it said you could go to any facility in the state. I ALMOST DROVE 2 HOURS to renew my license! All Susan needed to say was I needed another proof of residency and I was welcome to come back. When I returned with extra documentation, I got Susan again. She didn't waste any time hassling me. This time about my vision test form I brought from my eye Doctor's office (which she accepted the first time I was there). I was very disappointed in this employee and her demeanor.
