I heard this is the only bookstore in Oshkosh?! If they only have one, this is the one to have. Bright, colorful, and well-organized, with a very kid- and family-friendly vibe, as well as a welcoming place for the quieter bibliophiles. There are frequent free events for children and families, including sensory-friendly events. It’s a spot most kids won’t mind stopping at often.nnAs a mom of a successful college-age son who struggled with reading early on, I can say this would’ve been the place we’d have kept going to when he was younger. Many have asked why my son is the way he is - hungry for knowledge, always with a book or two under his arm. Since he was little, I always told him I never mind spending money on books he wanted to read, even if he didn’t read them right away - or maybe even ever. Books don’t expire, and sometimes just being surrounded with them, without the guilt of “having” to read one before you get another, is enough to jump start a child’s love of reading. If your child is seemingly not interested, maybe start with books you find “not acceptable”, like a book you think wouldn’t look like a good book for them to read. For my son that was the series Captain Underpants, and then Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Then books with photos of real mummies. Then we listened to audiobooks when driving - Bunnicula comes to mind. Once he realized reading could be fun and a little naughty or scary, kid-sized naughty and scary anyway, he suddenly took off into a world of books. Fast forward to the present, last night my now 19-year old was finishing Lord of the Rings, and in the middle of a book on Icelandic Sagas and another on Old English, and this is on summer break. I believe this is completely because of the stress-free way he learned to love books at a young age.
