Reviews
This fire department was built when I was approximately 8yrs old and lived next door, just north of it at 4614A S. Packard Ave. That was the address where I grew up; a small house shaped like a barn and was behind a much larger yellow house at 4614 s Packard.. that was our landlord Mr McGrath. With all this said, my happy memories of the fire department are still vividly fresh in my mind. The fire fighters used to sit outside the front of doors and being very shy of strangers, they began to say hello to me and gained my trust and admiration. For the life of me I don’t think I ever learned their names but I may have forgotten... must have been about 1957 or so. Anyway most every day I would walk in front of the building, going to Millers Bakery for my mom or Woolworths dime store for whatever we needed and I always stopped to talk to the firemen. Then one day they started to call me ‘Shot-z’ .Didn’t know what that meant and I still don’t but it didn’t seem like a bad thing so I would answer to it. ud83dude0a. For a time when I first got my new hula hoop, l found myself practicing with it and they would count LOL. I also remember that siren going off at all hours of the night; my window was open during the summer and the head of my bed was right there YIKES, scared me half to death the first few times we but, believe it or not I actually got used to it! All throughout the next 12 years I couldn’t have felt more safe and secure than I did in “the barn” as we lovingly called that little house I lived in. We were safe all because of those firemen. I suppose I could write a book about Cudahy, it would be more like a novel but if any one would read this and have even half the memories that I have, they would hang on every word, guaranteed! By the way, my name is Janice Taft (nee: Fuchs)
