Dr. John Holland

I never write reviews, but I feel it's necessary in this instance since I have never been so disappointed with a dentist in my life. My husband and I were patients at his Portland office, and I ended up needing a root canal and crown about three years ago. It never felt right, and there was a gap in between my gums and the crown, and while flossing the other day, it completely fell out. Crowns are supposed to last up to 20 years. After I went in to a new dentist, they found a pocket of decay, and said that there was a crack in the composite he used to build the tooth where the crown would sit, and that there would be a chance I would have to get it pulled and get an implant placed. My new dentist also said that Dr. Holland used a composite that wasn't as strong as what they would use for a crown. My husband had to get a root canal as well, and at his check up this year, they found the root canal had failed and that there was an abcess! He had to see a specialist to replace it since it was done so poorly. He does not do good work in my opinion. So much wasted money, pain, and time that we cannot get back.

THE WORST! My partner lost a tooth; I have to get a new crown AND two extra fillings thanks to this clown: Both of us saw him at his previous location in Portland. The crown he did for me was painful for a whole year despite failed and sloppy attempts to adjust it; it now has to be replaced. Turns out the crown is not flush with the tooth or my gumline; there is now a pocket of decay inside the tooth and exposed root at the gumline. He also drilled into a healthy neighbor tooth (without sealing it) in order to shove the crappy crown in. It will be an expensive re-do. As for my partner, Dr Holland did his first and only filling. It fell out. He then had it replaced. The new, larger filling also fell out, his tooth cracked all the way to the root, and the tooth had to be PULLED. He now requires an implant- $$$. I have NEVER had to re-do dental work, and I've had lots of it. The first small filling I had was fine, and the hygienist/office staff (pdx office) was amazing - otherwise I would never have proceeded to get a crown or recommend this office to my partner. I sincerely regret it!

John is super kind and very experienced. The office is beautiful, with great big windows in the lobby. Free coffee with super friendly staff!!

Terrible. I had two crowns put on less than two years ago and both have failed. One was clearly done poorly but he said it's fine and went to smoke, when I asked for an adjustment he threw a fit and was really rough with it. Both crowns have failed and I had to have one of the teeth removed. Worst dental experience I have ever had. My new dentist made fun of the terrible work done.

I do not recommend this office. They have been good in the past but I had a dental emergency last week. I called in the morning, after a night in pain. They got me in that morning. Good so far. The Dr. said the problem could be an old root canal. He numbed my jaw and gave me pain med and antibiotic prescription and another Dentist to call for appointment. I filled the prescription and took the antibiotic. When the Novocain wore off, the paid was 10 fold from before. i took the Vicodin but it didn't touch the pain. I called the office and was told by Shelly (not sure of spelling) that I had a referral and I needed to call for an appointment. I explained that I had done that and taken the Vicodin but they couldn't see me until tomorrow and the pain was too intense that I needed help now. I had a dental emergency and needed help with the pain. She called back and said they had prescribed me the wrong antibiotic. I should go back to the pharmacy and they would call in another one. I explained, again that I was having extreme, extreme pain and needed help with the pain. She told me there was nothing she could do for that and I need to wait for the endodontist's appointment and go get the new antibiotic. I explained again that the problem was the pain and it was unbearable and I needed help. I left work, called my husband and he started looking for an emergency dentist. Dr. Holland left a message for me on my work phone after I left. He never called me on my cell phone but Shelly did. She had an Endodontist that would see me but he would not take my insurance. I told her I was in too much pain and driving now to deal with it. Don't call me back. I went to Emergency dentist and received great care. He gave me Percocet and after the Novocain wore off it took two Percocet to relieve the pain. If you have an emergency don't bother to call Dr. Holland's office just call Emergency Dentist on 125th and Stark. Dr. Davis is very caring. I realize that my lack of care was more from the office staff than the Doctor but I would have expected that after being a good patient for years there would have been more compassion for my pain.
