Guanoco Lake is the largest asphalt lake in the world. Also known as Bermúdez Lake, it is located in Venezuela, southeast of the state of Sucre, in the Benítez Municipality, in the Unión Parish, 65 kilometers northeast of the city of Maturín, in the state of Monagas. Guanoco Asphalt Lake is one of the five largest natural asphalt lakes in the world, the others being La Brea in Trinidad and Tobago, Rancho La Brea (Los Angeles), McKittrick Tar Pits (McKittrick) and Carpinteria Tar Pits (Carpentry) , all located in the state of California, United States. There is no record of the first sighting of the Guanoco asphalt lake, what is known is through reports from the chroniclers of the Indies and the action of missionaries that for a long time the Warao people used the asphalt to caulk their canoes
